The MIND website is an online resource for caregivers and patients suffering from neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury.
Another neurological disorder is Essential Tremor (ET). ET is one of the most common neurological diseases and is defined by rhythmic involuntary movements of the hands or arms and normally occurs during activity.* ET affects about 0.9% of the population (almost 1 person in 100). When only people over age 65 are considered, the percentage increases to 4.7%.**
To date, there are no objective biomarkers that can ensure an accurate diagnosis. ET can be confused with other movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. In such cases, neurophysiology testing (tremor analysis) can be helpful to determine the tremor rate aiding clinical diagnosis.
Nuclear medical imaging can also be performed to ensure that the dopamine pathway (affected in Parkinson’s disease and other Parkinsonism syndromes) is intact, as would be expected in ET.
GE Healthcare has also designed a free iPad app that provides brain stimulation for people with neurological conditions. Through music and art, users will have the opportunity to engage in activities on both emotional and physical levels, resulting in an experience that users will, ideally, find to be stimulating and fun. The GE MIND App is now available now at the iTunes Store or at www.mindonlinecampaign.com
