Clinical and commercial leaders from GE Healthcare and Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado, joined together today for a special tour to honor the Center’s continuing innovation in cancer care.

Dorcy Cancer Center is among the eight winners of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) 2012 Innovator Awards, sponsored by GE Healthcare. The awards honor member programs that have exhibited forward-thinking strategy and pioneering cancer care. As well, the awards facilitate sharing of best practices and replicable models to help catalyze cancer innovation in the community setting. ACCC is a leading national multi-disciplinary organization that sets the standard for quality care for patients with cancer.

Dorcy Cancer Center was honored for its team approach in providing care to patients with head and neck cancer, addressing the unique issues faced by patients – including difficulties with communication and swallowing, tooth decay, weight loss and lymphedema. Dorcy clinicians created a multi-disciplinary team made up of a radiation oncologist, physical therapist and dental hygienist to provide comprehensive care for patients that addresses not only radiation treatment needs, but also associated side effects. Through this approach, Dorcy created a truly innovative model to drive the continuum of care for each patient, and to make a difference in the lives of those living with cancer.

“Patients with head and neck cancer face a host of challenges, from accurate diagnosis to treatment and ongoing evaluation,” said Janet Dennis, Rehab Team Leader, Oncology Administration, at St Mary-Corwin Medical Center. “Our team’s goal is to come alongside the patient and overcome these challenges as quickly and effectively as possible – and to be recognized by GE Healthcare with this honor is both humbling and encouraging as we continue our mission.”

In addition to the 2012 ACCC Innovation Award, GE Healthcare presented Dorcy Cancer Center with a plaque recognizing the hospital’s efforts and alignment with GE’s healthymagination initiative, which seeks to improve access to quality healthcare for more people at a lower cost.

At GE, we envision a day when cancer is no longer a deadly disease. Honoring Dorcy Cancer Center and other innovators in cancer care supports GE’s ongoing commitment of $1B R&D investment to advance oncology solutions by 2016. By accelerating cancer innovation, this can help to improve care for patients with cancer, the leading cause of death worldwide.
